Spring break 2021

Last year I had booked a condo in Florida for spring break. We haven’t always been annual spring break vacationers, but the winter blues are more bearable when you have something to look forward to. As we all know, Covid had different plans.

This year with so much uncertainty, I wasn’t sure what spring break would look like. I get the whole week off from work every year. Unfortunately Chuck had some machinery coming in from California, and his week was jam packed. Could I take the kids on vacation alone for a week? I wasn’t sure, but I was sure as hell gonna try. I called, begged and pleaded with Morgan to accompany us on the trip. Perhaps I should have waiting a bit longer than a day after she babysat the kids for 4 days while Chuck and I flew to Florida. I think she had her sibling fill. She was actually a much harder sell than I thought. Finally after what felt like forever she agreed and we sealed the deal. Her and Darrian would go with us.

I reserved a mini van in January. We were going on a road trip. I looked into flying but it was insanely expensive. I just couldn’t justify it, no matter how hard I tried. A week before we were set to leave I got a call that they wouldn’t have a mini van available, but I could have a mid sized suv. A mid size suv equivalent to a Jeep Cherokee or a Dodge Durango. I tried my very best to be patient and kind. I understand that spring break rentals are busy, but I thought it was fair to assume when I made the reservation in January that it was a done deal. You know what they say about assuming things. After much thought and discussion we decided that we would have more room in my car. My new car, that I wash at least once a week, and never let anyone eat in. The one that actually has a garbage basket that the garbage goes in, and gets wiped with armor all wipes whenever I’m sitting in a line somewhere. Sweet Jesus, this was gonna be fun.

Thank goodness I have a good friend in the dealership business who was able to secure some cross bars for me. We’ve had large Thule car-top carrier for quite awhile. We used it a few times when we owned our mini van. Thank goodness it was a perfect fit. This wasn’t going to be so bad. I’d throw the luggage up top, and my people in the seats. I decided that I’d have to let them eat in the car. I packed them snacks, a case of water and a mom bag. The Mom bag consists of all things possible. You know, all of the things that you may possibly need. Clorox wipes, toilet paper, paper towel, the medicine cabinet and so much more.

6am was our scheduled departure time. I think the kids were up at 4am. We packed up and pulled out at 6:04am. Hella memories are about to be made.
